LANAP Montclair, CA

Safe and Effective Gum Tissue Restoration in Southern California

The laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP®) is a minimally invasive treatment that reverses periodontal (gum) disease. The LANAP® protocol is the only gum disease treatment scientifically and clinically proven to regenerate soft tissue and alveolar bone.

Here at Cunning Dental Group, only our LANAP-trained dentists can perform this FDA-approved procedure and restore balance to your oral health with less postoperative pain, significantly fewer side effects, and minimized risks than traditional surgery.

No Cut, No Sew, No Fear

Just hearing the words “you need gum surgery” can immediately strike fear, even among the bravest patients. Fortunately, advancements in dental technology have eliminated all reasons to fear gum disease treatment. The “No Cut, No Sew, No Fear” slogan helps educate patients about the LANAP protocol and increases treatment acceptance. By changing the terrifying narratives associated with periodontal surgery, we can encourage more patients to seek the treatment they need.

How LANAP Laser Surgery Benefits You

Before you submit to a scalpel and stitches, consider these seven benefits of LANAP periodontal treatment:

  • Less postoperative pain. Using the state-of-the-art PerioLase® MVP-7 laser, the LANAP protocol avoids the need to cut open and stitch your gums — a standard requirement for conventional osseous surgery.
  • Quick healing. You may return to your daily activities within a day after the treatment, which, in most cases, only requires less than a 24-hour recovery period. In comparison, the recovery time needed after scalpel and suture surgery is around 2 to 4 weeks, with many patients enduring considerable pain and swelling.
  • Gum regeneration without foreign materials. The PerioLase dental laser will stimulate your body’s healing response, meaning our LANAP dentist in Montclair does not need to use foreign growth factors.
  • Healthy gums with minimal recession. When your gums are cut, the tissue shrinks and can reveal more of your tooth’s root. The LANAP protocol does not require cutting your gums, therefore, the soft tissue stays intact.
  • Better, longer-lasting results. 95 percent of patients who choose a laser dentist for gum disease display stable periodontal health.
  • Safe for patients with certain health problems. If you take medications like anticoagulants or suffer from diabetes, HIV, or hemophilia, you may still be a candidate for the LANAP protocol. Schedule your appointment today to determine whether this option is right for you.
  • Increase your life expectancy. Laser therapy for gum disease may do more than improve your oral health. It may play a role in reducing your C-reactive protein and lowering a factor called glycated hemoglobin, which minimizes your risk of diabetes. If you have diabetes, the LANAP procedure may even increase your lifespan.
how lanap surgery benifits you

A. Perio probe indicates excessive pocket depth.

B. Laser radiation vaporizes bacteria, diseased tissue, pathologic proteins, and alerts the practitioner to the presence of tartar.

C. Ultrasonic scaler and special hand instruments are used to remove root surface accretions.

D. Bone is modified at time of surgery.

E. Laser is used to form a gel-clot containing stem cells from bone and PDL.

F. Reattachment of rete ridges to clean root surface, with a stable fibrin clot at the gingival crest to create a 'closed system'.

G. Occlusal trauma is adjusted.

H. New attachment is regenerated.

Difference Between LANAP and Traditional Gum Surgery

If you have moderate to severe periodontal disease, your gums have likely begun pulling away from your teeth, creating pockets. These pockets deepen as the disease progresses, causing eventual bone loss. How conventional perio surgery and PerioLase address them differ greatly.

In traditional gum surgery, a dentist will scrape the inside of those pockets, trying to prevent bone loss since the infected bone will not grow back.

If you choose PerioLase, your periodontist can create a stable environment where your oral cavity can regenerate on its own. Having a very high success rate in gum reconstruction, this procedure can stimulate your gums to reattach to teeth.

An Overview of Your LANAP Procedure

Our Montclair periodontist at Cunning Dental Group will:

  1. Examine your gums and measure periodontal pockets.
  2. Use the laser light from the PerioLase MVP-7 to eliminate the infected tissue and destroy the bacteria beneath your gum line.
  3. Use ultrasonic scalers and other dental equipment to remove hard calcified deposits called tartar or calculus.
  4. Mold pockets to inhibit the formation of new tartar.
  5. Use the laser light again to connect gum tissue back to the tooth root.
  6. Seal periodontal pockets with fibrin clots, which prevents new oral bacteria from entering and provides a sterile environment for your body to begin the healing process.
  7. Adjust your bite for added protection against bone loss from bite trauma.
Overview of lanap procedure

LANAP Recovery and Post-Operative Care

Although the LANAP protocol does not involve cutting and stitches, there are still important postoperative instructions you should follow, including:

  • Take all prescribed medications according to your dentist’s directions.
  • Reduce physical or strenuous activities for several hours after surgery.
  • Do not be alarmed if an “unusual” change occurs, such as your gums changing color or appearance following surgery. Connective tissues can be yellow, red, gray, purple, blue, white, or “stringy.”
  • You are allowed to spit, rinse, and wash your mouth on the same day after LANAP laser surgery. Rinse as advised with Peridex morning and night. In between, you can rinse every three hours with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass with 8 ounces of warm water).
  • Keep your mouth clean to aid the healing process. However, only brush and floss the untreated areas of your mouth.
  • Do not apply excessive cheek or tongue pressure onto the surgical sites.

Eating After LANAP Laser Periodontal Surgery

  • During the first 24-hour period after laser gum surgery, stay on a liquid diet. For the following three to seven days after treatment, we only recommend a soft diet consisting of nutrient-dense foods, including eggs, cottage cheese, fruit and vegetable smoothies, yogurt, etc. Stay away from hot (temperature), spicy, crunchy, and chewy foods.
  • Avoid chewing food in or near the areas of your mouth where the laser has been used for about a week following surgery. Remember, one of the most important results of the LANAP protocol is the blood clots that form, since they are the seal preventing new germs from invading your gums.

A Good Candidate for Laser Periodontal Treatment

If you have moderate to severe gum disease, and especially if you are fearful of conventional scalpel surgery, you can greatly benefit from the LANAP protocol.

The Dangers of Untreated Gum Disease

Over 80 percent of American adults have some degree of gum disease, making it one of the most common diseases in the United States. Yet, as few as 60 percent of Americans know they have it. Making matters worse, only 3 percent of people with moderate to severe gum disease will accept treatment — mostly due to fears and anxieties. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause recession, loss of bone, and ultimately, permanent tooth loss. If you suspect or know that you have gum disease, getting treatment now can save your smile.
